Carola Siksma Ruiters

Sometimes I am struck by an image in which the world seems to stand still for a moment. A glimpse, an impression, an inspiration. This happens to me while taking a walk in nature, during an encounter, while reading a passage from a book, while watching a television fragment, and during my travels. An image then appears on my retina that impresses me so much that I want to capture it on canvas. Call it a quirky raid, whim or original twist, I call it a caprice, hence the name: Carola Caprice!

Between abstract and semi-abstract

Why I am struck by an image at that moment goes beyond seeing a beautiful composition with color. The context, what people tell me about it, what I read or feel, certainly also play a role. My work is between the abstract and semi-abstract. As I paint I explore processes and feel the energy of the image I want to capture with lines, shapes and colors. A primal feeling takes place where brush and paint are given free rein. I paint with speed, movement and loose touch, until the moment I let go of the image and continue painting intuitively.

Color and composition

Setting up the first layer is quick and spontaneous. Then I release the image, apply new layers of paint, place lines, look again at composition and shapes until the moment I am satisfied. That is sometimes after a few hours, sometimes after a few weeks… I work with both acrylic paint and oil paint. Painting for me is a physical and liberating experience. With the final result I want to evoke a certain feeling. These can be feelings of beauty, emotion, appreciation, admiration, nostalgia, sadness or joy. I hope to touch you with my abstract landscapes so that you actually experience the passion of my work.
