What is abstract painting

Abstract painting: the art of free expression

Like many, I started with figurative painting but found my direction in semi-abstract painting a few years ago. But what are the differences between abstract and semi-abstract painting?

Representation of emotions, ideas, feelings and visions

Abstract painting is very liberating; it allows you to step outside the boundaries of reality. Unlike figurative art, which focuses on recognizable shapes and subjects, abstract art is all about depicting emotions, ideas, inner feelings and visions through colors, shapes and textures. It is an art form with a rich history that remains influential in the art world to this day.

History of abstract painting

The origins of abstract painting lie in the early 20th century. Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich were at the cradle of this new painting movement and played an important role. Kandinsky is often considered one of the pioneers of abstraction. He believed that art did not necessarily have to depict objects or nature, but rather could be a means of conveying deep spiritual experiences.
Piet Mondrian, known for his iconic compositions with straight lines and primary colors, sought universal harmony and order in his work. Malevich, on the other hand, developed the suprematist style, emphasizing geometric shapes and a limited color scheme to communicate pure feelings.

Techniques and materials in abstract painting

Abstract painters use a wide range of techniques and materials to bring their vision to life. Below I list some popular techniques and approaches: Using acrylic paint
Because of its quick drying time and versatility, acrylic paint is a favorite among abstract artists. It can be thinned for a watercolor effect or applied thickly for texture. Oil paint
Oil paint offers rich colors and can be mixed slowly to create complex color transitions. The disadvantage is the long drying time, which can affect work speed. Mixed techniques
Many abstract artists combine different materials such as ink, collage elements, chalk and even found objects to add depth and complexity to their work. Action painting
A technique popularized by Jackson Pollock in which paint is spontaneously dripped or splashed onto the canvas, resulting in a dynamic and expressive work. Geometric abstraction
In this, clean lines and shapes are used to create a sense of order and balance. Artists such as Mondrian are known for this approach.

Abstract painting means openness to interpretation

One of the most important aspects of abstract painting is its openness to interpretation. There are few if any recognizable subjects; the viewer is allowed to make their own meaning. And that is different for everyone. Some see the abstract painting as an aesthetic work, for others it evokes emotional feelings. Abstract art invites viewers to project their own emotions and experiences onto the work, creating a personal and often unique connection. This makes abstract painting a powerful form of communication, despite, or precisely because of, the lack of concrete forms.

Abstract painting in modern times

Although abstract painting dates back to the early 20th century, this painting movement remains ever-evolving. Contemporary abstract artists continue to experiment with new materials and techniques, inspired by both traditional methods and modern technologies. The rise of digital media has opened up new possibilities for creating abstract art. When decorating interiors and public spaces, abstract art is often chosen. Why is that? It is because the viewer can make their own interpretation of the abstract work, without specific cultural or historical references.

Abstract painting is more than an art form

Abstract painting is more than an art form; it is a way of thinking and feeling. It offers an artist boundless latitude to express their inner world and viewers the chance to connect with art on a deep level. Whether it is the harmonious lines of Mondrian, the expressive strokes of Pollock or the digital abstractions of contemporary artists, abstract painting remains a dynamic and inspiring part of the art world.
